It seems like there’s a wealth of information out there for those interested in homeschooling or those of us who already do it. We’re lucky to have such resources and to be able to find support in local co-ops, Yahoo! groups, church groups, etc. There are numerous magazines, books, and blogs where you can read about how other families do it.
It’s important to remember that although it’s helpful to find support and information for your homeschool journey, it’s not wise to compare yourself to other homeschooling families. The beauty of homeschooling is that each family’s story is so different from the next.
It’s fun to read about the different curriculum's, schedules, lifestyles, and priorities of others, and to socialize with other homeschooling families, but you’ll make yourself and your children miserable if you attempt to model your homeschool after theirs. Trying to imitate another family’s methods will almost always lead you to disappointment because your needs and desires may not align with theirs.
My advice to you would be to consider what your own family’s needs, priorities, and desires are before trying something just because it’s a new idea to you. The wonderful thing about homeschooling is the diversity within the supportive community of homeschoolers.
If something works for your family – stick with it! Be content! But if something isn’t working - - then consider asking others what works for them, and if it “meshes” well with your family, then by all means, give it a shot.
