Tuesday's Thrifty Tips

Here are our Tuesday's Thrifty Tips to save money and live as a Thrifty Diva in this economy:

  • Save money on haircuts by cutting your own hair. You can buy a haircut kit at Wal-Mart for $20-$30. We cut our kids hair and my husband's hair in our family and save $30/month ($360/year).
  • Look for used items before you look for new items. Use Craigslist, Freecycle, and Ebay for purchases - you'll be amazed at what you can find.
  • Cut out cable. This is painful but we're about to do this in our household. It will save us $70 a month (over $800 a year!).
  • Use your local library. Instead of buying books, check them out of the local library. The library also has DVDs that you can check out, which will save you alot of money on movie rentals.
  • Find FREE entertainment. Find cheap ways to have fun. Entertainment can be costly; the average person spends about $1800 on entertainment yearly. You can still have fun on a budget by being creative. Take the family bike riding and pack a picnic for a FREE family outing. Instead of an expensive date night out (dinner and a movie), rent a movie at Redbox for $1 and cook an inexpensive dinner.

Share your Thrifty Tips with us and we'll post them on our blog.

Prepare to Grocery Shop!

I am curious to know how everyone grocery shops? Do you make a mental list of the things you need and just head to your favorite store? Or do you do your homework, plan out your weeks worth of menus and look in your pantry/refrigerator and figure out what you need for the week ahead?

For anyone who knows me, I am pretty organized and detail -oriented. It's my nature. It comes in handy when it is time to grocery shop. I make my list of meals, check my "inventory" and make a list. Then I check the weekly ads to find the best deals and then I get my coupons ready. It's just my routine.
When I pull my coupons, I also print many coupons off the internet (called IP - internet printables). Here is a list of my favorite sites:
You should check these sites out before you go shopping next time!
Of course, I also check manufacturer websites for printable coupons, too!

Tuesday's Thrifty Tips

Here are this week's Tuesday's Thrifty Tips to help you save money:

  • Combine errands to save on gas. Think ahead and at the beginning of the week, make a list of the places you need to go. Plot your errands carefully so you're not wasting gas.
  • At the end of the day, put your change in the bank. Put all of your change in a large jar or bank. At the end of the year, you will have extra money for Christmas spending.
  • Unplug electronics when not in use. After using the coffeemaker and toaster in the morning, be sure to unplug them for the rest of the day. They drain energy even when they aren't in use but are plugged up. By doing this with all household appliances, you can save almost $250 in an average household per year! Computers and printers especially drain your energy and your pocketbook! If they are on a power strip, turn the strip off and unplug it.
  • Call your cable or dish provider and ask for a lower rate. 2009 rates to new customers are 12% lower than 2008 rates and by calling your provider and telling them that you are thinking about switching services, they should give you a lower rate. A friend of mine did this and got $15 savings per month on her bill for the rest of the year! By the way, I am calling my provider this week!

Saving Money - Kids Birthday Party

It's that time of year again ... planning my kids' birthday parties. I have 2 boys with summer birthdays (sigh) and because it's SO hot here in Florida, it's either the pool or someplace air conditioned! This year, I really have to stick to a budget so I've been doing some research. I am sharing what I have found in hopes of helping a few of you out there who also have summer birthday parties to plan!

Throw Birthday Parties on a Budget: Save $225 per/party

  • When planning a birthday party, give your kids a set budget, and let them decide what they want to spend their money on. Bonus perk: It teaches kids the value of a dollar.Shop at a dollar store for goodie bags and decorations.
  • Have a joint sibling party and increase the budget a little. I have done this for the past 3 years and it's great!
  • Keep the cost of food to a minimum and have the party at a time other than lunch and dinner. For example, have the party at 2 pm and just provide cake and drinks for everyone.
  • Buy a fun cake shape mold and make your own cake. I am wondering if I am brave enough to attempt this. I will let you know.
  • Throw a themed birthday blowout at your home instead of an expensive outing. You can also have a themed party at a local park.
  • Kids love games so be sure to have some great games planned. Plan games for the ages of the kids and if there is a range of ages, be sure to offer games for everyone.

Check out FamilyFun.com for great birthday party theme ideas! Also, check out Birthday Party Ideas for other helpful information about planning and games!

Saving Money - Extending Your Hair Color!

2 out of every 3 women color their hair. In this economy, we all want to stretch our dollars and make our hair color last! Here are some ways you can get the most for your money.

Before your color:

  • Wash with a clarifying shampoo a day prior to dyeing.
  • Choose fade-resistant shades such as blonde or brunette. Reds wash away a week or two faster because they contain smaller color molecules, which escape from hair more easily.
  • Pick the right formula. Demipermanents (like Clairol Natural Instincts) stay up to 28 shampoos, and permanent colors (like Garnier 100% Color Vibrant by Nutrisse) don’t rinse out but fade over time.
  • Highlights – from a pro or an at home kids such as Revlon Custom Effects Highlights buy you the most time.

After your color:

  • Wait 48 hours after your coloring before you shampoo. Dye molecules need time to set into strands.
  • Cleanse with a shampoo for color-treated hair, which contains gentler detergents, and rinse with tepid water. Hot water expands the cuticle, contributing to fading.
  • Install a shower head water purifier. Tap water contains chlorine, which is a bleaching agent. Even well water has minerals like copper that coat the hair and alter its hue. Try the iWater Shower Purification System.
  • Use a conditioner or styling aid with built in sunscreens to prevent the sun from stripping your shade. Try Redken Color Extend Conditioner. UV filters bind to safe-guard strands.
Spritz on a thermal protection spray such as Dove Heat Defense Therapy Mist before styling. Polymers prevent heat from penetrating hair and breaking down the dye molecules.
  • Switch to an ionic blow dryer, which has tourmaline, a type of stone that generates negative ions that reduce frizz and cut dulling drying time in half.

On a regular basis:

  • Apply a conditioning mask once weekly. The added hydration strengthens strands, making them less prone to environmental damage that causes fading. Also, creating a smooth surface helps hair better reflect light, making color look more vibrant.
  • Three weeks post-coloring, switch to a color-enhancing shampoo every other time you wash.
  • Monthly, use an at-home glaze gloss (available in clear and tinted formulas) to add high-wattage shine and intensify a fading shade.

Beverly's Bargain Tips - Great-Grandma Money Saving Tips

Our guest blogger, Beverly has some fantastic ideas about saving money. She calls them “great-grandma tips”, which are tips that our great-grandma’s would approve of if she lived in today’s world. The basic premise is that if it makes sense to do something our great-grandmothers would have done it, then do it!

Here's some great money saving ideas for the kitchen:
  • When cooking or baking, double the recipe and make 2 (i.e. casseroles or cakes) and freeze one of them. Use them on a day when you don't feel like making dinner.
  • Create a "veggie scrap freezer bag" by saving the scraps from cutting vegetables and put them in a bag and put in the freezer. When it is time to make soup or cook a whole chicken, add the scraps for added FREE flavoring.
  • Save the ends of your loaf of bread; put them into the freezer. When you have a decent amount of time, put the bread scraps in the food processor and make homemade breadcrumbs. Toast in the oven for dried bread crumbs.
  • Buy celery, 2 lbs of carrots and a bag of onions. Dice the three root vegetables in even amounts. Cook in batches in a skillet with a bit of olive oil or canola oil until soft and sweet. Cool and put in 1 cup batches for a great soup starter and freeze. Put the scraps in your veggie scrap freezer bag.
  • Cook a turkey and eat a little for dinner. Dice the turkey and put in freezer in 1 cup batches. Use the turkey in casseroles and soups. Save the bone and make turkey bone soup later.
  • Cook a ham and eat a little for dinner. Dice the ham and put in freezer in 1 cup batches. Use the diced ham on homemade pizza, soups, casserole, etc. Save the bone and make ham bone soup with navy beans and spinach.
  • Grow a garden in your back yard. Process the produce at harvest time by freezing or canning.
  • Save broken cookies or graham crackers and their crumbs. Use to make a crust for a yummy custard pie.
