Frugal Friday: Save Money on Groceries

I love talking about saving money! Saving money excites me and I find myself really getting passionate when I talk to people and share ways they can save money.

I especially love saving money when shopping for groceries. It's like second nature to me to save $40 or $50 at the grocery store when I shop. People behind me in line are always amazed at how much money I save on my groceries! Of course there's an occasional person behind me at the grocery store who wishes they chose a different lane because I have so many coupons!

There are so many easy ways you can save money when buying groceries. If you're new at this, don't be overwhelmed. It's really not that difficult or time consuming. Here are my favorite tips:

  1. Clip coupons! Clipping coupons is the single biggest way to save money on groceries. Combine a coupon with a store sale and you have big savings! Be sure to clip all of the coupons, even if you know you won’t use the items. You can share coupons with neighbors or even trade. This is successful if you find someone that likes different coupons than you. For example, I trade with my mom sometimes because she doesn’t need coupons for snack foods or kid’s foods like I do. If you're interested in serious trading of coupons, join a coupon train on various websites including A Full Cup or Hot Coupon World.
  2. Print coupons. You can print so many coupons online these days that you almost don't even need to buy the newspaper! Check out these sites for printable coupons: Smartsource, Redplum and Coupons.com.
  3. Know the prices of staple items. These are items you buy every week (i.e. bread, milk, cheese, etc). Write down the prices of the top items you buy every week and carry that list with you when you're shopping. When there is a sale or promotion, you’ll know if it’s a good deal or not. If you shop for beef, pork or poultry every week, check out this article from For the Mamas with great information about good "stock-up" pricing.
  4. Do a little research. This can be done a few different ways and you can put as much or as little time into it as you like. You can review Sunday advertisements in your local newspaper. You can find websites that will do alot of the work for you and they tell you what is on sale at certain grocery chains and they even give you links to coupons and help you make a grocery list! This is my favorite way to do research! A few of my favorite sites: Southern Savers, Coupon Mom, Swag Grabber, and Abundant Food Savings.
  5. Make a list. Don't forget to make a list of things you need and take it to the store. Going grocery shopping without a list will surely mean you spend too much money on things you don't really need.
  6. Use price-matching. Does your local grocery store have a price-matching policy? If you don't know, you should find out. You can ask a cashier, customer service desk or go onto their website to find out. National supercenters Wal-Mart and Target each have price-matching policies. I use Wal-Mart's price-matching policy regularly. I simply present the advertisement of the competitor to my cashier and show her the price of the item that I am buying and she/he will do a price override. It really does pay to use price-matching policies.
  7. Shop high and low – in the store, that is. Look around your grocery store for markdowns. They aren't always in the most convenient places and they may up high or down low. Many stores use end caps to house markdown items. Another trick is to know when markdowns are taken in your stores and shop on those days.
  8. Stack coupons to save more money. This is really the secret to saving money. What does "stacking" coupons mean? It's easy! Stacking refers to the fact that you can use a manufacturer's coupon plus a store coupon for the same item. Not all stores allow this. The national stores that do allow this where I shop are Target and CVS. Where can you find store coupons? You can find Target store coupons here plus use the register receipt Target store coupons. You can find CVS coupons here or use the register receipts you get (Extra Care Bucks) when you shop in store.

You can find more frugal tips in the blog meme "Frugal Friday" on Living as a Mom. Check it out or use Mr. Linky to add your own frugal tips.

As I said, I love saving money! I love sharing my secrets so others can save money, too. What are your secrets to saving money on groceries? I'd love to hear from you!

Guest Post: When Does Stocking Up Become Hoarding?

I love to read blogs, especially those written by other mommy bloggers like myself! I guess I am kind of addicted to reading blogs. It's such a fun way to meet people and learn interesting things!

I found a great blog called Steals & Deals, which is written by 2 busy moms - Abby and Mandy. The blog features the latest store ads and deals, great product reviews, awesome giveaways and detailed money-saving articles. You really should check out Steals & Deals.

Today, Abby is sharing an article about stocking up.

When Does Stocking Up Become Hoarding?

Okay none of us want our homes to turn into something that looks like the picture above, right?

There is a fine line between stocking up for your family and turning into the crazy lady down the street. Where do we draw that line? That question is very debatable but let me tell you how I make that decision for myself and my family.

I have read studies that show that sales run in 12 week or 3 month trends. So for example, when I find a can of Baked Beans (which my son absolutely adores) on sale for 25 cents a can instead of the regular price of $1.29 a can, I ask myself these questions:
  • How many of these cans do I think we will need in the next 3 months?
  • Does that number fit into my budget for this week?
  • Am I cleaning this store out as to not leave another can of Baked Beans for this entire store until restock day and leaving it unfair to other shoppers who may like to take advantage of this deal as well?
  • Do I have enough room to store what I am buying?
  • Is there a limit to how many the store says I can get?

These are all questions that only I can answer about my own financial, spacial, and well lets get right down to it moral situation.

Now I am wondering how is it you decide how many items will be enough for you to stock up on? Do you see the free or little to no money and get giddy? Don't be ashamed we have all been there I know I have in the past but after doing this for a while now I have stopped to readjust my thinking to use these above questions in my weekly shopping outings.

Instead of seeing that big time sale and grabbing my full outstretched arm to wipe the entire shelf clean of Baked Beans I think "hmmmm, okay... good deal now lets stop to think .... just how many do I need?"

I should say also that the above scenario is a hypothetical situation (no baked beans that I know of this week are on sale for 25 cents a can) of an item I know my family loves and would most certainly use.

How do you handle a situation of it is a free or next to free item you are unsure of whether your family may like or use? For me personally these are the times I only take one or two because to be honest with you I just hate to be wasteful too.

So I am curious how do you guys decide how much is enough when you are stocking up?

FREE - Kids Meal at Sweet Tomatoes on October 30 & 31

Our family loves Sweet Tomatoes! If you haven't tried it, you really should because the have so many healthy options and everything tastes great!
Here's a reason to go - they offer FREE kids meals on October 30 and 31 if you're kids are dressed in their Halloween costume. It doesn't appear that a coupon is needed for this promotion but this promotion cannot be combined with a coupon. Click here to find a location near you.
What does Sweet Tomatoes restaurants have? Their menu offers a wide variety - something for everyone!
  • A wonderfully fresh salad bar (with 3 pre-mixed, seasonal salads) plus about 75 salad ingredients if you prefer to make your own.
  • A delicious soup bar with approximate 10 soups, including seasonal ones. They rotate soups weekly so you're almost guaranteed to never get tired of the same soups! They offer several soups with beef or chicken plus they offer vegetarian options. I love the fact that they offer low-fat soups, too! By the way, all of the soups are so tasty!
  • A hot pasta bar with at least 3 pasta options. They seem to always have macaroni and cheese - my kids personal favorite!
  • A hot pizza bar with gourmet pizzas.
  • A hot bakery bar with muffins, breads and at dinnertime, they offer desserts.
  • A fruit bar with fresh fruits, jello, and mousse.
  • An ice cream dessert bar that includes an ice cream machine and dessert toppings.

Of course Sweet Tomatoes is a buffet so everything is "all you can eat". Kids meals are very inexpensive and adult meals are reasonable. Lunch is a little cheaper than dinner (because at lunch there are no desserts).

You can save $75 yearly by joining their Club Veg. I highly recommend it. I always have coupons e-mailed to me weekly and our family of 4 can typically eat there for about $20.

We Received Another Blog Award!

Thank you so much for following us and supporting us!
We're so excited to announce that we've received several blog awards in the past few weeks! We'll be posting all of the new awards in the coming week or so! We're so glad that our readers and fellow bloggers find our blog to be resourceful and to be given these awards is such an honor!
Our Award: Honest Scrap Award
Sheila Rae from Living Smart Girl - A Healthy Way To An Organic You was so gracious to give The Thrifty Divas this award of "Honest Scrap". Sheila has a fantastic blog that has many interesting elements, including fitness tips, recipes, shopping, and awesome giveaways! You should check out her site today!

Here are the rules of the "Honest Scrap" award:
  1. Present this award to 7 others whose blogs we find brilliant in content and/or design, or those who have encouraged us, inspired us and these blogs are made of "Honest Scrap".

  2. Tell those 7 people they've been awarded "Honest Scrap" and inform them of these guidelines in receiving the award.

  3. Share "10 Honest Things" about us.

Passing the award to ....

We're passing along this award to blogs that we think are brilliant, creative and inspiring! These blogs have great design, great content and most of all .... they are made up of "Honest Scrap". Here is our list of these 7 blogs and we invite you to check them out:

Congratulations to you all! We love blogging with you!

Now, here are the "10 honest things" about us, The Thrifty Divas:

  1. Elizabeth doesn't drink coffee, although once owned a coffee shop! Go figure.
  2. Laura loves Coffee and needs her caffeine fix every day! A morning without coffee is like....well, sleep!
  3. We live in north Florida, where it's still hot in late October and we're still wearing shorts and sandals. The summers are unbearable and we live at the pool all summer with our kids. Trust us, it's the only place to be when it's 95 outside!
  4. We both grew up in other areas of the country. Elizabeth grew up in Virginia and Laura grew up in Minnesota.
  5. Elizabeth is a little OCD...okay, maybe alot OCD. Just ask Laura - she thinks Elizabeth is a bit crazy.
  6. Laura not quite as OCD as Elizabeth... but Elizabeth is teaching her! Elizabeth feels the need to rearrange everything in Laura's kitchen at least once every month! Laura's husband fears Elizabeth will rearrange everything and he won't be able to find anything without a map!
  7. Elizabeth has 2 small boys who she loves to cuddle with at night! The oldest is nicknamed "snuggle bunny" and the youngest is nicknamed "cutie pie".
  8. Laura has two boys, ages 6 and 4 as well as a girl, age 3. The oldest is nicknamed "Bubba", the middle one is "Tank" (he's 65lbs at 4, tall and all muscle, just ask Elizabeth) and our youngest (the girl) "Peanut"!
  9. We both love to workout at the local YMCA. You will find us there most mornings after we drop our kids off at school.
  10. We challenge each other to find the best deals and we share coupons. Sometimes we go shopping together. The day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday) has become a shopping tradition for us!!! We love to save money!
