Beverly's Bargain Tips - Great-Grandma Money Saving Tips

Our guest blogger, Beverly has some fantastic ideas about saving money. She calls them “great-grandma tips”, which are tips that our great-grandma’s would approve of if she lived in today’s world. The basic premise is that if it makes sense to do something our great-grandmothers would have done it, then do it!

Stretch your dollar by using ordinary items from your kitchen. Recycling not only saves money, but it creates a mindset of making the best with what you have. Kind of like that old saying "If you’ve got lemons, make lemonade."

Plastic Milk Bottles.
1) Cut off a portion of the top, leaving the handle in place. Add birdseed and make a bird feeder, hanging it on a clothesline or tree branch.
2) Make a garbage caddy for the sink, especially great if you don’t have a garbage disposal.
3) Make a caddy for tools or painting supplies.
4) Cut off the bottom and use the top as a funnel.
5) Fill the entire jug with beans and use for exercise weights, or just storage for the beans.

Plastic Soda Bottles
1) Make a homemade tornado, place two bottles together, top to top - filling one with water. Tape the tops together and swirl around to make a tornado effect.
2) You can also make a funnel from the tops of soda bottles.
3) Add some sand or rice and use for a homemade bowling game for the kids, just be sure to glue the caps on.

Jelly Jars/Mason Jars
1) Remove labels and use for gifts, placing a pretty piece of fabric on top and tying with a ribbon.
2) Great for pencil holders.
3) Fill with candy.
4) Use for storing cotton balls or q-tips in the bathroom.
5) Store sewing notions, crafts or hardware.

Baby Food Jars
1) Perfect for lost buttons.
2) Store small nails.
3) Keep beads or small craft items sorted easily.

Egg Cartons
1)Great seed starters, get a head start on Spring.
2) Storing plastic Easter eggs.
3) Make a memory game for children, matching up items from around the house.
4) Storage for collectible rocks.
5) Jewelry box, great for earrings.

Salt
1) Remove grease and stains from pans and dishware.
2) Put out a grease fire.
3) Clean a sticky iron plate by sprinkling salt on a piece of paper and moving the hot iron over it.
4) Ease the pain of beestings.

Baking Soda
1) Add to a damp cloth and remove crayon and marker from walls and furniture.
2) Pour a little down the drain with some vinegar, let sit 5 minutes and wash down with warm water to clear clogged drains.
3) Mix with facial cleanser to make an exfoliator.
4) Ease the pain of beestings.
5) Line a litter box to prevent odors.
6) Keep an open box in the fridge to prevent odors, put one in the freezer too.
7) Use ¼ c. on a damp food burned pan, let sit for 5 minutes and scrub clean easily.

Coffee Cans
1) Use food bag labels and create unique storage containers for flour, sugar, cornmeal, etc.

Mesh Onion Bags
1) Add leftover pieces of soap and make a scrubber.
2) Contain small items while in the dishwasher.
3) Cut bag open and scrunch together to make a dish scrubber.

Frugal Vacations Part 2

Are you skipping a trip this summer to save money? Thinking you can't have fun in your backyard? Think again!! Try a Staycation and enjoy exploring your own backyard while discovering the simple pleasures in life. Here are some great money saving tips and ideas to enjoy a Staycation in your hometown.

1. Tap Those Natural Resources In Your Area: Check out your local tourism website and see your hometown in a new way. For local hiking trails near you, try this website.

2. Explore The Art Scene: Most towns host free summer festivals dedicated to arts, crafts, local produce, flea markets and antiques. Make sure to check out free outdoor concerts and theater performances through the local newspaper and the Chamber of Commerce website. Have you visited your nearby art or natural history museum?? What a wonderful way to spend the day!

3. Camp Out In Your Own Backyard: Pitch a tent, make s'mores over the grill and tell some funny and scary ghost stories. The National Wildlife Federation has designated June 27, The Great American Backyard Campout Day! So go ahead and make a family night to remember!

4. Swim With Friends: Make sure to make use of the public pools around your area. Most offer free or reduced admission on certain days or times. They are usually big as well so make a day of it by inviting friends and family along.

5. Catch A Cheap Flick: Like in my last post (Regal's Free Family Film Festival) Take advantage of cheap movies. Most chain cinemas offer free or $1 G and PG movies on certain weekday mornings. Be sure to check with your local movie theaters to see what they have to offer.

6. Raise A Glass: Any one interested in Wine Tasting??? Most states have a wine-producing region. Get a group of friends together, designate a driver and check out American Wines for tasting opportunities near you.

As always the most important thing to keep in mind while planning your summer activities, enjoy and make lasting memories. Remember, you don't need to spend a ton of money to have memories that will last a lifetime!

A Full Cup - A Great Website For Saving Money!

I admit that I love to save money! I have been doing it since college and it's become a challenge to save more and more money each week! I probably bore people with my "savings detail" but I hope I help some people save money at the same time.

One of my secret weapons is a website called A Full Cup. It can be an overwhelming website at first but it offers so much if you are really interested in saving money. It offers basic saving information, websites for printable coupons, forums to discuss money savings ideas, coupon swapping, and coupon databases (including the Target Coupon Generator). You can sign up (for free, of course) and utilize their tools.

I highly recommend that you log onto the website and register. I'll be teaching you more information about this site in the upcoming posts.

My Thrifty Friends

I have to tell you about my "thrifty" friend, Angela. She loves to use coupons but she has taken it to the next level with saving money!
Angela recently told me how she gets coupons without paying for the paper. It is a clever idea - she goes through recycling bins on recycling day and takes full sets of unused coupons! What a great idea! She also isn't afraid to go after coupon inserts in dumpsters - or "dumpster diving" as she calls it. While this might not be your idea of fun, it's a very "thrifty" idea to get coupons!

Today Angela called me to tell me how she found 4 sets of Sunday papers with coupons for FREE. She stopped by the local Florida Times Union (our local paper) office and asked if they had any extra Sunday papers. They had 4 copies they were going to throw away so they gave them to her for Free.
What is the old adage: What is one person's trash is another person's treasure. How true!

Thrifty Summer Fun For Kids

Summer is quickly approaching and if you're like us, we're wondering what to do with the kids all summer ?!

Here are some thrifty ideas for you to keep the whole family entertained this summer.

1) Head to your local library. Our local library offers summer reading programs, storytime, arts/crafts and movies for all elementary school children. We will be at our library alot this summer and it will be great to be indoors when it's 95 degrees outside!

2) Go to the beach, lake or local pool. What a great way to stay cool this summer! Check out waterparks, also.

3) Don't forget reading! Involve your kids in a summer reading program at the local library or at Barnes and Noble. The one at Barnes and Noble is great because kids can earn free books!!!!

4) Have playdates with neighbors, friends and groups! This wears the kids out and allows moms to actually have some quality time with other moms!

5) Cook together. Kids love to experiment in the kitchen so plan a day of cooking, baking and just having fun together in the kitchen.

6) Let the kids loose in the yard. Turn on the sprinkler and let them run through in their bathingsuits. We did this this weekend and actually washed the car at the same time!

7) Check out your local state park for fun activities and festivals. In Florida, check out the website. In all other states, check out the website.

8) Go fly a kite. It's easy, fun and very inexpensive! You can buy a kite or make your own. For tips on how to make your own, click here.
9) Have a scavenger hunt in the house. This is a great way to spend a rainy day with your kids. You can be creative and draw a map showing where the treasure is and all of the "x marks the spots" along the way. Shop at the dollar store for some great treasures to hide.
We'd love to hear your ideas! Send us your ideas via email or leave a comment below. We'll be publishing additional summer ideas in the next few weeks.

Beverly's Bargain Tips - Saving Money on Utilities

We are proud to introduce our guest blogger, Beverly Trowbridge. She lives in Jacksonville with her husband and 3 children (ages 6,4, and 2). We consider Beverly a "thrifty diva" and an expert shopper when it comes to saving money! She really understands how to stretch her dollars and make them work for her. She offers unique bargain tips and we plan to share them with you periodically.

Beverly's Bargain Tips - Saving Money on Utilities:
  • Look at your utility bill! Beverly looked at an old utility bill from when she was first married in 1999 and compared it to a current utility bill and she's spending the same on her current bill as she did 10 years ago! And....she's in a larger home with 3 more bodies!
How does she do it? The savings are due to switching to florescent lighting throughout the house, using only cold water for washing clothes, and sealing leaks in the windows and doors. She also recommends taking other conservation measures that your utility company can tell you about - don't be afraid to ask!

  • For home phone service, Beverly uses MagicJack and only pays $1.98 a month for home phone service! Their plan is a 5 year contract that they paid $119 for, which includes the necessary equipment and shipping. MagicJack offers a free trial, free local and long distance and is definitely worthy of checking out!

  • For cell phone service, Beverly and her husband use Motorola Tracfone and an average bill is $16 a month. Their cell phones are for emergencies only and their plan includes 600 minutes per year. Best of all, the unused minutes roll over to the next year. They have already had their phones for 2 years and are saving lots of money!

Frugal Vacations

Want to get away from your house for awhile and enjoy seeing areas of our beautiful country?? Think you can't do it without breaking the bank?? Well I have news for you! YOU CAN!! Here are some great ideas to get away as a family or just a couple that won't break your budget or your sanity!!

1. Camping: A great low cost option for families that enjoy the great outdoors. Sleeping in a tent is not a must, as there are many state and national parks that rent cabins for a very reasonable fee. As an great bonus, when you are registered at a state park, you gain free entrance into all state parks. Check out the website for a cost effective way to view some of our nations most beautiful parks. Cost is $80 a year and that covers your non-commercial vehicle at per vehicle fee areas and pass holder + 3 adults, not to exceed 4 adults, at per person fee areas. (children under 16 are admitted free) You can't beat it! State and National Parks are a great way to enjoy our beautiful country.

2. Beach It: If you want to beach it, be sure to check out all your options for lodging. Often a large family can save money by renting a condo or home for the week rather than staying at a hotel. Remember, you can also save a huge amount of money if you can prepare your own meals while on vacation. A large portion of a family's budget can be spent on food. So even a little kitchenette in a suite can save you dollars. Just think of the money you will save by just doing the little things.

3. Visit Friends and Family: Plan to visit friends or family that may live far away, or even those that live nearby. In today's fast-paced society it is not unusual for family and friends to lose touch. Not only will save money you will get to some quality time with friends or family you have not seen in awhile. This is a great way for everyone to have fun and enjoy time together.

Whatever you decide to do for family vacation make sure you know all your options. Check all prices, don't make assumptions. Check out all alternatives. Make sure you know your deadlines and cancellation fees.

If all of this is not your cup of tea and you want that exotic vacation - remember there are great vacation packages out there to be had. ALSO - Travel agencies are privy to a lot of travel information, especially seasonal discounts. Make those calls and find out more.
Lastly and most importantly - The most important thing about family vacations or couple vacations is quality time together. Make those memories something you will always cherish. So get started on planning a fun, safe and frugal vacation!!
